Being one of the most isolated, secretive, dark and censored countries in the world, North Korea continues to baffle audiences and surpass trends of journalistic opportunity. It has one of the largest militaries in the world, a staggering domestic infrastructure and much speculation as to what goes on inside the closed-to-exhibition country. The citizens aren’t allowed to venture outside and no official economic data has been published since 1965, which is both scary and bold at the same time. The few sources for basic statistics on the North Korean economy include the United Nations, volunteer organisations, and other economics data aggregators and analysts around the world.
The East Asian country is infamous for its human rights violations and repeated nuclear missile tests, dismantling its reputation in global circles. According to the 2022 Index of Economic Freedom, which measures the ability of every human to control his own labor and property, North Korea is ranked 177th globally and 39th in Asia-Pacific indicating that the country has a repressed economy. There are no companies in North Korea.
