The Israeli-Palestinian conflict has a long history and is a complicated topic. Hundreds of thousands of Palestinians were displaced when the State of Israel was established in 1948. Since then, the region has been defined by decades of violence, including revolutions and wars. The Palestinian Islamist group Hamas first appeared in the 1980s and took over the Gaza Strip in 2007. The organisation has played a significant role in the war, frequently confronting Israel with weapons. Significant numbers of people have died, infrastructure has been destroyed and Gaza is currently experiencing a humanitarian catastrophe as a result of these hostilities. International relations and regional stability have been adversely affected by the ongoing conflict.
Despite numerous pleas for a peaceful resolution by the international community, progress has been hampered by the long-standing mistrust and divides between the two parties. The 1948 Arab-Israeli War, the 1967 Six-Day War, the First and Second Intifadas and several peace talks like the Oslo Accords are some of the major events that influenced the conflict. The region’s persistent tensions and humanitarian catastrophe are highlighted by more recent events like the 2021 Gaza War and the 2023–2024 escalation. Political, religious and geographical issues together with the conflict’s complicated past, continue to be major obstacles to regional stability and global peace initiatives.
