Russia Ready for Nuclear War if US Sent Troops to Ukraine
Russia has warned that the war in Ukraine could spin out of control and expand geographically due to the provocative actions of EU/NATO member states. While Germany, UK, Spain and Poland are not willing to send troops, French President Macron refused to rule out sending troops and has called on allies not to be “cowards”. UK has said that it would provide 10,000 drones to arm Ukraine. Sweden – which shares border with Russia – has abandoned its neutrality to become the 32nd member of NATO.
On Wednesday President Putin said that Russia was technically ready for nuclear war and if US deployed troops to Ukraine, it would be treated as intervention. Putin’s nuclear threat has come just days ahead of election which is expected to give him another six years in power.
Biden administration has ruled out plans of sending troops though it is trying to pass the stalled security aid bill to continue supplying of weapons to Ukraine. Among US adults, 80% have an unfavourable opinion of Putin, but only 40% have a favourable opinion of Ukrainian President Zelenskyy. The latest poll by the Associated Press shows that only 25% of Americans think that their country should take a more active role in solving the world’s problems.
The west seems to grappling on how to support Ukraine as Moscow has already annexed four regions – almost one-fifth of Ukrainian territory. According to Russia, the military operation is to bolster its own security against a hostile West and to defend the Russian-speaking population of Ukraine’s south east. Russian spokesperson Maria Zakharova has advised the West to stop supporting Ukraine with money and weapons – and the sooner it is done, the better as it would avoid further death and suffering.
