The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) emerged victorious in the 2024 Indian general elections, securing a third consecutive term under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership. However, the triumph was not without its caveats. The BJP’s victory, while significant, revealed a weakened stronghold, with the party losing ground in several key areas that were once considered its bastions. This comprehensive analysis explores the multifaceted reasons behind this phenomenon and what it signifies for the party’s future.
The Electoral Verdict
The BJP, along with its allies in the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), won a majority, but the party itself fell short of the single-party majority mark it had achieved in the 2014 and 2019 elections. The results indicated a humbling for the BJP, which had set a target of winning 400 seats but managed to secure only 293. The opposition, led by the Congress party and the newly formed Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA), won 234 seats, nearly doubling its tally from the previous election.
