South Korea’s President Faces a Reckoning

Welcome back to the World Brief, the flagship newsletter of The Viyug delivered to you directly from the Editor’s desk, catching you up on 24 hours of news in five minutes. In today’s edition of the newsletter we’re looking at the South Korea’s president facing probability of impeachment over his declaration of martial law followed by Japan’s space ambitions, the Cricket World Championship, and ending with smaller news bytes of Syria’s ongoing updates, US-China research agreement and France’s prime minister.

Cover Story

Yoon Suk Yeol’s declaration of martial law on earlier this month revived memories of South Korea’s authoritarian past. A survey by Gallup, a pollster, suggests that that president’s approval rating has plunged to 11% – his lowest yet – while 75% of respondents believe he should be impeached. But the president, known for his stubbornness, is not backing down. This week, in a raving address, he accused the opposition of “parliamentary dictatorship” and promised to “fight until the end.” Yoon’s defiance will be tested on Saturday, when parliament votes for a second time on whether to impeach him.
